Red Tomax's Guide to City of Heroes

I started playing City of Heroes back in August 2004. At that time the game had not been released the the EU so I, like many other European gamers, downloaded the US version of the game and played on the US servers.

Nearly a year later City of Heroes finally recieved a European release, I didn't join the EU servers straight away because of the friends I had made in-game and at the time doing so would mean starting over completely from scratch, abandoning the characters I'd spent the best part of a year building.

Back when I started playing the best source of information for City of Heroes was a great little site by a community member known as Artphobia, unfortunately once he left the game and passed on the website to new owners the updates slowed until eventually they stopped completely. The guide was last seen at "City of Heroes Online" and, content wise, is pretty much as Artphobia left it as far as I can tell.

City of Data - Now updated for Issue 12

After a couple of months working through my backlog of missions to put into the database I'm finally up to date on that front, which means it's time for an update to the City of Data project at last.

So if you've ever fancied being a Night Widow but don't have time to spend on the Test server you can get a glimpse of what's in store for you when i12 goes live over at City of Data.

You'll also notice I've put a lot of work into tidying up the display of powers to hopefully make it a lot easier on the eye. The most obvious example is when looking at a power which grants an enhancement to a set of damage types/defense types. Now, instead of listing the an effect for each damage type, the effects are grouped into one item.

Hopefully I'll be able to keep the site up to date with the changes asIssue 12 evolves on Test server.

Discuss this over in the forum or visit my thread on the official City of Heroes forum.

Four Year Anniversary!

Positron just posted his anniversary speech / announcement, and I think the meat of his message is the following excerpt:

I can't tell you how excited I am for our game's future, and although we have some major announcements yet to be made, one of the things I can talk about is a feature that we are planning. Similar in concept to our character creator, it allows you, the players, to create missions and story arcs for your characters and others to participate in. You'll be able to pick the map, villain group, and objectives, as well as write the dialog and any clues needed for the missions. When you are satisfied with it, you can upload it and have other players across all servers play it and rate it. Fame will come to the players whose stories rate the best overall. It is features like these that we never dreamed of including when we first shipped, but are excited to be able to offer players very soon.

I know this will be a pretty major time-sink for myself. What amazing news!

City of Data - Now updated for Issue 11

20th March 2008

Four Issues have passed since the creation of the City of Data project. Iakona has since moved on, but thankfully there are other clever folks around who are just as interested in how the game works as he. Thanks to them (and recent changes to the game itself) I am finally able to update City of Data whilst retaining it's focus on accuracy.

As always, if you have any feature requests, or found a bug let me know on the RedTomax.com forums -- generally stuff get's done a lot quicker if someone specifically asks for it :)
